Tuberous breasts, also known as tubular breasts or constricted breasts, are a congenital condition where the breasts fail to develop fully during puberty. This condition is characterized by breasts that are elongated, narrow, and often have a constricted base, giving them a tubular or tube-like appearance. Tuberous breasts may also have a higher-than-normal breast crease and areola herniation, where the areolas protrude outward more than usual. The exact cause of tuberous breasts is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic factors and hormonal influences during breast development.

What are my options?

Treatment options for tuberous breasts typically involve surgical interventions aimed at reshaping and enhancing the appearance of the breasts. Some common approaches include:

This involves using breast implants to increase the volume and improve the shape of the breasts. In cases of tuberous breasts, implants can help fill out the constricted base and create a more rounded appearance.

A breast lift can be performed to correct sagging and reshape the breasts. This procedure involves removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple-areola complex, and lifting the breast tissue to achieve a more youthful and symmetrical appearance. Sometimes this can be done at the same time as the augmentation.

Tissue expansion involves placing a temporary device called a tissue expander under the skin and gradually filling it with saline solution to stretch the tissue. This technique can be used to expand the constricted breast tissue and create a more natural breast shape before breast augmentation or reconstruction.
Tuberous breasts often have enlarged or herniated areolas. Areola reduction surgery can be performed to reduce the size of the areolas and improve their symmetry with the rest of the breast. It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience treating tuberous breasts to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on your individual anatomy and aesthetic goals.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
This really depends on your anatomy and procedure you end up getting. With tuberous breast correct, the underlying constricted tissue is always released (called “radial scoring”) to help that breast tissue redrape over the implant. Then, with time, as the breast tissue and skins stretch over the implant, that puffiness will be less apparent and even go away. However, sometimes patients also need an areolar reduction. The good news is, you can do this at the same time or in stages and still get similar results.
Most women (80%) can successfully breastfeed after breast augmentation with implants, which is similar to the general population where around 20% of women experience challenges due to low milk production. For patients with tuberous breast characteristics with or without augmentation, this number may be lower.
It is normal to have a change or decrease in sensation right after surgery. In most cases, this fully returns in a short period of time (usually by the first or second postoperative visit). However, the more surgery that is done and the more incisions that are made (such as with an areolar reduction), the higher risk of changes in sensation. In general, my patients have a full return to normal sensation after surgery.

Other Breast Procedures

Dr. Nguyen understands that any surgery or procedure can be a life-changing event that requires thoughtfulness on the part of both surgeon and patient, and she never takes this for granted.
My goal is to provide an augmentation that complements the patient’s body frame and proportions. This involves selecting implant sizes, shapes, and profiles that are in balance with the patient’s chest width, breast width, and overall body shape.

Nipple reduction surgery is a sought-after procedure among individuals who were born with large nipples or areolas or due to changes like weight gain or piercings. These large nipples can cause discomfort and embarrassment. Many patients prefer the aesthetic of smaller nipples and less prominent areolas, as they are less noticeable under clothing. There is a simple, safe, and effective procedure to reduce your nipples to the size you desire.
